Preparing Presentation for "Fusebox Integration With ColdSpring" for WebManiacs

Conferences , ColdFusion , Frameworks | 09:05 | | Posted by Oğuz Demirkapı 2 Comments »

I have a surprise this morning that I need to present another topic at WebManiacs and today and just ~2 hours later. :)

Confrence team requested from speakers to fill out some presentations and I had replied that I can present this topic. But there was no confirmation. While checking the topics this morning I saw my name on the list. :)

I think this is probably because of a small disorganization and I had to check all topics in advance. But anyway I have to prepare my slides now. :)

See you ...

WebManiacs Presentation Slides: The Power of MySQL

Conferences , Open Source , Database | 23:05 | | Posted by Oğuz Demirkapı 6 Comments »

Here is my presentation slides from todays session.

"The Power of MySQL"

I think it was pretty informative presentation about the basics of MySQL. I also feel that MySQL is a widely used platform in development but not in production. This is something that I expected from ColdFusion community when I think about MS SQL Server usage. But I think this will change by the time especially because of the power of the MySQL server and the open source community projects which mostly prefer MySQL as main database platform.

Luckily we have a native support in ColdFusion 8 and this is something that would be a good reason completing ease of MySQL usage especially when I remember the dilemma on embedded drivers in ColdFusion and old JDBC driver installation requirements etc.

I am also excited about the new MySQL storage engine Falcon. I feel that this will be something important in the new future for the database world preferences.

Please feel free to share your comments and ask any question that you may have.

Internationalization (i18N) for Turkish

Personal , i18N | 15:05 | | Posted by Oğuz Demirkapı 1 Comment »

May be you know that I am originaly from Turkey. I used to be also ColdFusion users groups founder and manager for Turkey. And of course in nature I have big interest on Turkish language and usage in any language.

Turkish is a language which uses a latin base but as you can easily understand that we have some different characters such as in my name.

Here is the Turkish alphabet: "a b c ç d e f g ğ h ı i j k l m n o ö p r s ş t u ü v y z"

As you can see we do not have q, x and w and we have some extra chars as ı, İ, ç, Ç, ö, Ö, ğ, Ğ, ş, Ş.

Having Unicode as encoding is a solution for most cases. But it would be sometimes challenging while getting the data and especially the main problem may occurs on searches or sorts etc.

Here is a nice page which explains the nature and history of Turkish language for Internationalization (i18N).

Internationalization for Turkish: Dotted and Dotless Letter "I"

I hope it would be helpful to understand some basics and the origin of my name. :)
